The Indian Government has launched the .bharat domains names in the Devnagari script. The Devnagari script the script using which languages like Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit are written.
The initiative by the Government of India will have as many as eight languages covering the .bharat domains. Apart from Hindi and Marathi mentioned above, it will also include the Konkani language.
The companies in India, who wish to own websites in the Devnagari script, can easily own a web site now. Having a web site in Hindi and Marathi has got all that easier with the new domain names.
These domain names will the ‘.bharat’ in the Hindi script as its extension in place of the commonly seen top level domain extensions such as ‘.com’, ‘.in’ or ‘.net’.
Communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad spoke more about the new .bharat domains. He said that he has spoken with the concerned department to make the domains accessible in other Indian languages as well.
And it looks like people speaking other languages will also get to have domains for other Indian languages such as Gujarati, Telugu and Tamil. The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) will shortly introduce the Internationalized Domain Name (IDN).
Connecting India through Internet
Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, speaking about the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s views on technology said that the Prime Minister propagates information technology in a huge way. He further added that the government will be able to connect as many as 60,000 villages this year alone with broadband.
Around one lakh villages will be connected in the next year and the same number, in the ensuing year. This would become possible through the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN) programme.
It is estimated that the project will be to the tune of Rs. 35,000 crores. Through these efforts, Indian villages will be connected through high-speed broadband. India aims to have 2.5 lakhs gram panchayats connected by the end of March 2017.
Coming back to .bharat domains, India will soon start having the related domain names in the regional languages. That will give a lot of scope to those people who are having trouble with the English language.
