Facebook – the largest social network on the planet has turned 10 years old. The web site that was literally started in a dorm room in Harvard has grown up to be one of the biggest networks in the web industry.
Initially, the teen age group made up for the chunk of the members for Facebook. But over the years, things have changed and today, Facebook caters to the users of all age groups. This has given the company a sound user base and has easily secured the place in the tech industry.
Experts believe that Facebook has in fact brought the world much closer than what it was 10 years ago. But at the same time, there are people who think that the social revolution that Facebook has started, might not be able to control it. And recently there were also reports about Facebook losing 80 per cent of the users in the next three years or so.
But it must be admitted that in a decade Facebook has touched the lives of millions of people around the globe. It has in fact, become a part and parcel of daily life for hundreds and thousands of people. The co-founder of the social network Mark Zuckerberg has said that it’s like making the world more connected and open.
According to Lou Kerner, who is the founder of Social Internet Fund, of the total time spent on the web, around 20% is spent using just Facebook alone.
The extended use of mobile devices has also given a push to the Facebook’s monthly active users. There are now around 945 million monthly active users who are accessing the site through mobile alone. And a total of 1.23 billion monthly users are active on the site.
