Samsung Galaxy A8 Preview

Samsung has finally unveiled the 2018 version of its smartphone offerings in the mid-range segment, the Samsung Galaxy A8, and Galaxy A8 Plus. While the Samsung Galaxy A8 Plus is now available in most regions across the globe, the Samsung Galaxy A8 is slated for a worldwide release sometime later in April 2018.

Both the devices have similar specs with screen size being the main difference. The Samsung Galaxy A8 is the smaller one with a 5.6-inch display and 4 GB of RAM, unlike the A8 Plus which has 6 GB RAM. Check out our Samsung Galaxy A8 preview to know more about the new device which will help you to make your decision.  In this Samsung Galaxy A8 preview, we will be dealing with the A8 so that you can be informed about its pros and cons. So without further ado, let’s get started and check Samsung Galaxy A8 preview.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Design

Sharing the design attributes with the current flagships from Samsung’s stable the A8 has an impressive and functional design. The mid-range segment of the smartphone market is now hyper competitive with great offerings from new age brands, the likes of OnePlus, Huawei and Xiaomi.

In such a situation, it is becoming increasingly important for the traditional brands like Samsung to launch competitive devices borrowing features from their flagship offerings. And precisely for this reason, many might have speculated that this time around, Samsung will bring the unique curved edge displays from its flagship offerings to the A series, but it seems Samsung wants the curved edge displays to be a signature feature reserved for its flagships only. The Galaxy A8 instead features a flat display with 2.5D curved glass on top. However, the 18:9 aspect ratio bug seems to have bitten every major smartphone manufacturer and Samsung is no exception.

Unlike its predecessor, the A7 series, this time around Samsung decided to do away with the physical navigation buttons in favor of a thinner lower bezel. The fingerprint sensor has been moved to the rear end and thus enabling the A8 to sport some pretty thin bezels all around. Curved edges make it comfortable to hold the A8 and overall it has a good design for one-handed use.

Built around an Aluminium frame with glass on the front and back the Galaxy A8 surely feels very premium. The volume rockers are on the left edge and the power button on the right edge of the phone. In a Samsung first, the front side now has dual cameras for portrait mode selfies. There is just a single shooter at the back of the fingerprint sensor right below. A bump around the camera module differentiates it from the fingerprint sensor, but even then accidental smudges on the camera lens are inevitable. At the bottom, there is the USB type C connector for connectivity and for the music lovers rejoice, a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Available in black, orchid gray, gold and blue at present with other finish options expected to be made available soon, the Galaxy A8 Plus sure gives enough options for everyone to choose from.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Display

Just like the A8 Plus the Galaxy A8 sports a bright and vivid Super AMOLED Full Hd+ display that’s hard to ignore. It has a rather unusual 18.5:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2220 by 1080 pixels. The 5.6-inch screen boasts a decent pixel density of over 440ppi.

In a Samsung first, the A8 has dual cameras on the front with a 16+8 MP setup with the 16 MP sensor having a maximum aperture of f/1.9. The single rear camera also has a 16 MP sensor underneath, with a maximum aperture of f/1.7. The rear camera can shoot 4k videos and has digital image stabilization, HDR support, autofocus and a single LED flashlight. The front dual camera setup allows for a good portrait mode with live view. Both the front and back cameras perform well under all light conditions, but comparatively the picture quality suffers a little under low light.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Hardware

With 4gb of RAM and 64 GB of inbuilt storage, the Galaxy A8 is powered by the Octa-core Exynos 7885 SoC which has six Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.6Ghz and two Cortex-A73 cores running at 2.2Ghz, coupled with the Mali-G71 onboard graphics processing unit. The presence of a micro SD card slot allows for the storage capacity expansion up to 256 GB, ensuring you never run out of space.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Software

The A8 Plus falls behind some of its competitors as it comes with Android Nougat 7.1.1 instead of the latest Android Oreo 8.0 even though Oreo has been out for quite some time now. While Samsung has promised a rollover update sometime later in Q1 2018 it’s hard to forgive this big blunder.

Samsung Galaxy A8 Battery

Powered by a 3,000 mAh battery the Galaxy A8 with the efficient Exynos 7885 get through the day with medium usage. Support for fast charging allows the phone to be charged in under 100 minutes.
