The IPv6 is easily termed as the future of internet. The existence of the IPv6 had become the need of the hour. The use of internet is increasing with each passing day. Such is the reach of the internet that if there is anything after food, clothes and shelter, it is internet. The IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol.
In easy words, the IPv6 means Internet Protocol version 6.
But before going into those technicalities, you should know what an IP address is. In simple words, the IP address is the unique identity of a computer. Every computer has an IP address that is unique to it. The IPv4 was version that was widespread in use.
But now, the IPv4 has virtually been exhausted. The reason is the number of gadgets that are coming to the market and the wide use of the same. Internet has reached every field of human life from office to kitchen. No wonder, all these equipment like telephones, sensors, various appliances require an identity of their own that comes through IPv4.
Back in February 2011, the Number Resource Organization (NRO) had announced that the free pool of the available addresses of the IPv4 had been entirely been used up. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) had then allocated the outstanding IANA pool uniformly between the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs).
The interpretation of this in a nutshell is that there aren’t any such IPv4 addresses, which could be allotted to the RIRs from the IANA. But this does not mean that the IPv4 addresses have entirely become extinct.
The IPv6 is the latest Internet Protocol version, which has been built to replace the IPv4. There is longer space in the next generation of the IP. It can manage additional blocks of IP addresses for the increasing number of laptops, mobile phones and any other similar handheld gadgets.
IPv6 can increase the size of the IP address from 32 bits to 128 bits. This means there can be 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses.
In some of the other features of the protocol, there is more efficiency in routing, the quality of the service, the security and the extensibility apart from efficiency in packet processing. In short, IPv6 is the future of internet in more ways than one.
