Facebook will now become a source for information on the Indian candidates who are contesting polls for both the Assembly and the Lok Sabha elections. The General Elections are slated to be held in India in the next year.
The move has become possible by virtue of Facebook and Democratic Reforms (ADR) coming together for making available the information about the candidates on the mobile phones. And most importantly, the information is entirely free.
This has made a wide range of information available for the general public and the voters alike. The voters will now have way in the books of the educational, financial, criminal as well as professional information directly on the mobile handsets. The USSD technology has been used for this purpose.
Facebook for USSD is one such technology wherein people can have access to Facebook even without the internet connection. So, people who do not have an internet connection on their mobile set will also get to access the service. This technology allows the text on the phones to be rich than the normal SMSes, but pretty much cheaper than the charges for mobile internet.
Dialing *325# from the mobile can grant access to Facebook. After that you can either select the election menu or you can even directly dial *325*35# for accessing the election menu. There is no charge to the services, a statement regarding this information has said.
The service will make people more alert about voting and people will know exactly whom they are voting for. The details of the candidates will make it easier for all the people in the country to know more about the candidates, that wasn’t really possible until now.
